Pregnancy happens when an egg is fertilised with a sperm, and the fertilised embryo grows in the mother’s womb. For In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF), the fertilisation takes place outside of the mother’s body. The process involves taking the eggs out of the mother’s body, fertilising the eggs with the father’s sperm, and allowing the embryos to grow for a few days in a laboratory. The embryos are then transferred back into the mother’s uterus. If the implantation is successful, the pregnancy is confirmed about two weeks after the embryo transfer.

In Singapore, only married couples can undergo IVF and IUI.

Before undergoing any Assisted Reproduction Technology, clinics will generally require couples to attend a compulsory counselling session. During the counselling session, couples will be given a rough guide of the procedures, the timelines and the costs involved. The consent forms for the treatment and other administrative forms are usually completed after this counselling session. Do note that some clinics and public hospitals charge for the counselling session.
